Hey I have a 20 gal. goldfish aquarium and algae is growing. Algae should not be growing since it is cold water so why is it growing?????

how long are you putting the lights on for?

is the tank in any natural light?

ha, what happenes in ponds?

Nitrate will over grow with sunlight or artificial lighting. Unfortunately the only way to combat algea is to do water changes/get an algea eater and or get live plants. Live plants can get messy (well in my experience). I'm lazy and prefer plastic plants but will have to do more water changes which i dont mind.

yes it has natural light hitting it. I'll try buying an algae eater. what is a good algae eater?????

theres only one decent coldwater algae eater...they call them sucking loaches...i cant member what there real name is but i think they get quite big and aggressive

contrats on taming your coconut picture!

Yes, if you have any significant sunlight hitting a tank it is worth it to try hard to shade it. Sometimes devising a cloth screen or such that you can put in the right spot while you are away from the house can really help. Algae thrive in all sorts of conditions and move in quickly whenever plant growth factors (light, nutrients, co2) are not all used up by the plants. They can often be the scourge of the aquascape world.

Hillstream loach. They come under a ton of names, sucking loach is one of them. They're not that big, or aggressive. Territorial with their own kind, but even if they were aggressive, they're not big enough to pose a serious threat to the standard coldwater fish.

I can't find anywhere that anybody sells hillstream loaches where would you suggest?????
