evening all.

i have about 8-10 tropical fish, which range from guppies, mollies, tetras and platy.

last night i noticed that all of them were pooing alot and on the platys it was about 2inch long.

This evening the same seems to be happening, not problems with the fish, they all seem happy and are fed normally.

Is this a symtom of a problem about to heppen or just fish.

Thanks

it could be a problem warning or not

mine have trailing poo in one tank thats very diseased down to 1 fish now

Mollys, platys and guppys are a very greedy fish, if you overfeed them then they will have long poo trails, 99% of fish keepers over fed there fish, it is surprising how little fish actually need. My advice would be to revise how much you feed to be honest because i reckon that is why they are pooing so much

Cheers, Karl

We feed them every other day.

In the tank we have:

4 Platy
2 Molly
4 Goldfish
5 Neon Tetra
2 Guppy

How often and how much should they be fed, i dont think we feed them too much, however i might be wrong.
I know they ate a whole plant over the course of two weeks, i dont know if this was playing or hungry.

Once a day for 2-3 minutes is enough. Every other day is sustainable, but with daily feeding, fish can usually miss a week or more without going hungry. Less is usually better - it's actually pretty hard to starve fish to death.

how do you mean feed for 2-3 minutes,
we usually just sprinkle it in for them

I see big problems with your stocking of your tank, Goldfish are coldwater fish the others prefer it to be warmer, also if they are common goldfish they are going to get big and eat the other fish in your tank.
I think this needs to be addressed.

The advice for feeding by Corleone is sound advice, sprinkle in a few flakes and once they are gone sprinkle in s few more do this for 2-3 minutes making sure there are is no uneaten food in the tank.

Hey,
I see what you mean about the goldfish getting bigger, I have in the past had a problem where one of the goldfish ate two neon tetras.
They are getting big, but it seems they enjoy the enviroment and after the two tetras i have seen no foul activity, will it do them any harm being in there, if so then ill take them out, they just seem so much happier and active.

By the way, these guys are pooing too.

Feed in small amounts as they finish for 2-3 minutes. Controllable, and easy to avoid excess food fouling the tank. You don't have any bottom feeders, but this method does mean they need special sinking food, which is harder to gauge food with, but there's other considerations there I won't bother with.

Hi, fishygreek
Probably a silly question, but I'd hate to break the trend I've established
- just wanted to make sure there's not a lot of white, stringy poop involved, because this can be a sign of internal infection/parasites.
I expect it would have been mentioned, if so, but people don't always remark on this.

I would definatley remove the goldfish mate, Depending on the species they can get to 12" long. I commend that you are willing to take them out and I suggest you do this, as they are coldwater fish and wil eventually grow big enough to eat your smaller fish, as has been happening already :good: . Btw my platys use to poo all the time, its just natural :D

Hi,
I am getting a smaller one to put next to the current one, this should seperate them.
I was hoping to keep it heated because they look so much happier in warm tank.

Fish can get the trots.
