My tank should be done cycling pretty soon, and I am starting to think about my options. I am really new to fish keeping, and have tried to do my research. I want to create an aesthetically pleasing tank, with varied species, bit with such a small tank it is going to be hard. But not impossible! I have two options to take into consoderation, i could arrange the tank so my betta and/or my dwarf who are in bowls could go in there, or i could leave them in the bowls until i arrange something better, and put different fish in the tank. What would some of my options be?

You could go for some small, hardy tetras like Black Skirts or Black Phantoms... both very pretty in a group and quite hardy. If you go for either of these, or any tetra, get a group of at least 5. The more the merrier: they're less likely to suffer from stress in a school and are more active.

A few other options could be some livebearers (guppies, platies etc.), some White Cloud Mountain Minnows... go to your LFS and check out some species you like. :)

This may sound stupid, but when you say 'my betta and/or my dwarf', dwarf what? :dunno:

Dwarf in a bowl... umm... dwarf puffer mebbe? Dwarf Gourami? If either of those they can't go in with a betta. If it is a puffer, it needs to be on its own.

Sorry, i meant to type out dwarf frog. I must have had a mental typo...

You could get a small community of female bettas. :)
I have a planted 10G with 6 girls in it and they're wonderful!

Lots more options out there though your betta and dwarf could very well go in there with either a trio of platies or maybe some ghost shrimp (won't always work with a betta) or with a snail or maybe some more frogs or you may want to try a few pygmy cories...

Anyway, look into killies for a start but only if you are prepaired for a challenge and do a lot of research first as there are many different kinds. Then there's shell-dwelling cichlids. N. multifasciatus is my favourite and the smallest - again, you need to research, research, research! A couple of dwarf puffers would work ok too - again though - RESEARCH! :p Certain gobies and the badis as well... you know what I'm going to say ;)

For more community-type set-ups, consider a school of 6 spotted rasboras with either 4 pygmy cories or a trio of mosquito fish. Alternatively, these would work with the fish I mentioned or in place of them - platies, guppies, honey gouramies (a trio at most), sparkling gouramies, a dwarf gourami, smaller cories and smaller loaches such as the dwarf chain loach or possibly a couple of kuhlies, golden dwarf barbs, small tetras such as neons, cardinals or rummynoses, otocinclus catfish, very small plecs such as bulldog or bristlenose, even some smaller cichlids such as rams can work in a planted tank.

Basically, the possibilities are endless and the key - you guessed it - is to RESEARCH!!! Don't make any rash descisions as you'll soon regret them. There are so many lovely fish out there and, the more you search, the more you'll discover and the more you'll keep changing your mind until eventualy you'll find something you realy, realy love. Then go for it ;)

Good luck and have fun!

A tank of all male guppies is always colorful and fun....those fish are too cute!

No way, you could keep killies in a 5 gallon without a problem... in a 10Gallon you could have a few...
