I have decided to start going with some frozen foods. Is it ok to go exclusive frozen foods? Right now I have brine shrimp, bloodworms, and SFBB Emerald Entree for the omnivores, which is everyone except the betta. I feed once a day during the week, twice a day on weekends. I was going to alternate the 3 foods (one meal they get shrimp, next meal bloodworms, next meal the Emerald Entree, and back to shrimp. Is this going to be enough variety in their diet? Should I mix in some flakes every now and then? Is feeding exclusively frozen food bad for fish digestively speaking? I do expect to still have to throw in a pellet ot two for the catfish since very little of the frozen food lasts long enough to make it to the bottom.

Thanks,
Karl

In my opinion you should definately introduce more flakes and vegetable based products into their diet. Too much meat can make waste difficult to pass (pooping) and may lead to blockages. I feed my fish about 80% flakes and 20% bloodworm. I am aware that Emerald Entree is a mix of both but there is definately room for more fibre in your fishes diet.

You are definitely on the right track. A variety of foods is best. I do agree with Seidge however, less frozen and more flake. In my tank I feed flake and spirulina tabs regularly, frozen BS about twice a week, frozen bloodworm every week or so, and nothing about once a week.

I was under the impression that frozen is the best way to go, short of live foods. So you guys are saying do frozen sparingly?

Karl

It depends on the fish. Corydoras and tetras are omnivores and should receive a fair bit of vegetable matter in their diet. Feeding a strictly meat diet may cause them digestive problems. For your fish I would say a staple diet of flake and algae discs with occasional feedings of frozen foods a couple times a week would be best. You could also try feeding fresh vegetables such as spinich, romain lettuce, cucumber or zuchini.

Karl i think you misunderstood my line of thought. Using frozen foods is neither bad nor good. The important thing is to feed a fish plenty of fibre (not always meat). Most frozen products are meat. Frozen foods to my knowledge are as nutritious as any other type. Variety is the key :D

I would say frozen/fresh foods is are definately more nutritious than the dried ones, you only have to think that most dried foods are many months old before they end up in your fish tank. Many fish flake brands out there contain a lot of ash as well to bulk it out, which can't be that great for fish IMHO.
I agree though feeding veg is very important to balance out any high protein diet, and as you said, variety is the key :good: .
