All Fishes Have Died In <2 Hrs

Chestnut, you might want to ask yourself how live bacteria that need oxygen and ammonia to survive for any length of time live in a tiny airtight bottle at room temperature until you put them in your tank. This, along with personal experience, is why everyone says Cycle doesn't work. Bio-Spira, on the other hand, is frozen so that the bacteria lie dormant until reaching temperatures at which they again become active; this is why it does work, providing it has been kept properly. Do you test your water stats when using Cycle? I have tried Cycle before and tested my water stats daily during its use, and I can tell you beyond any shadow of a doubt that it is absolute crap. I saw no difference whatsoever and it still took 5 weeks to fully cycle. On the other hand, I've used fish to cycle many times without any obvious signs of stress in the fish, so unless you're testing your water on a regular basis you really don't necessarily know what's going on in there.

... Also, the point of the nitrogen cycle is not to get rid of nitrogen, but to convert it to less toxic compounds. If nitrogen in its elemental form were toxic we'd all be screwed, since the atmosphere is about 79% nitrogen

Not that I put much faith in the cycle type products... but it is not possible they act as some kind of bacterial steroid? The bacteria will start developing one way or another - I have had a tank which I only placed some decor and plants in and without adding ammonia or fish I went through a cycle (getting ammonia and nitrite readings)

So in my opinion, no matter what you do, you are going to go through a cycle? So with this in mind is it not possible these products simply provide some kind of boost to the bacteria developing in yourt filter, rather tahn magically making bacteria appear?

Lets take my recent moving of tanks as an example too... moved all fish from 70 and 120 litre tanks to one larger tank. Only moved filter media from 120 to the new tank, and also added some new fish pretty much immediately (perhaps not hte best idea). Also all new fresh water . So effectively, there would not be enough bacteria present to cope with the number of fish now in the tank. Surely I should have gone though a mini-cycle while the bacteria caught up?

Perhaps the capfuls of cycle I added when I moved all the fish helped with this?

*sigh*
"Hey everybody, lets ignore Chestnut's post, he's a dumbass!"
Chuckle.

there not ignoring you dude. there jus speaking from experience and i have to say i think there right too.

Bio spira is the only stuff ive ever heard of that does a decent job.

or potentially bactinettes, as bio-spira is not available in the UK.. this stuff is dispenced from a machine that uses ammonia for you, so that the bacteria is fresh and comes attached to these little balls. Has to be used within 24 hours or it wasted.
