I have a cycled 29 gal planted tank with lots of lights, plants and diy co2. Up until now it has been home to some barbs, but I want to try something new. I have had a male betta before but had him in a 2 gal bowl (i know i know ), but now I really want to do it right. About how many females I can put in my 29 gal comfortably? Will the co2 affect them?

Thanks LCM

I don't know about the CO2. I think it depends on the mix and formula you use--or something.

I figure 5 girls to each ten gallons, so you could concievably put 15 in a 30 usg. But other factors enter in. It is mostly in the decore and footprint of the tank and if there are other inhabitants.

I personally don't see a problem with a 2 gal bowl. It depends on the size of the fish, his peronality and if he is happy and you are doing the maintenance. What works for one Betta won't for another.

I have 7 females in a 15 gallon. As mentioned, it depends on the personalities of the fish and how many hiding places you can offer as to the number of females you can happily place in the tank. I have found that with the females, changing your decor every time you add a new resident makes a huge difference in how the existing members treat the new girl. And don't start your tank with less than 3 girls. :good:

I have tons of plants in the tank right now it is a regular 29 gal tall. I use a diy co2 (sugar/yeast). thanks for the help

well good luck on your new sorority tank.....

i am having a bit of a challenge in getting mine to be a co-existing peaceful tank......

everyone is having a munching fin party........and i can't pinpoint the culprit but i do know i have various temperments going. the two older ladies seem to be okay but they get bitten. violet seems to be stressed yet when i put her aside with the older pearl, it seems like she wants to bully her and doesn't leave her alone; but in the tank all together, violet is pretty much tagged on by the other younger girls.

my orange girl, fabiola, she is feisty and she pretty much is fearless and does as she pleases. it took her the longest to get nipped but finally she got nipped. i put her aside because i have seen her go after my blue one and the old ladies.

and well, sally, my spotted one, she is pretty much the only left in tact! i can't believe that.

i had to separate violet earlier this week because i didn't like the way her fins were looking. nursed her back to rejuvenated fins.

the later this week, my older girls were looking pretty beat up. so i took out fabiola because i know that isabel and pearl, the older ones, get along on their own.

upon putting fabiola in her own tank, i went ahead and took pearl and inez out and put them in the fin repair tank yesterday.

i put violet back in with isabel (who has damaged fins) and sally (no damage at all). and violet was pretty much in tact yesterday. this morning, violet has some little fin nipping on her anal fin. so isabel or sally did something.

it's like everyone is nipping!!!!!

but for the most part, during the day everything looks all peaceful and co-habitat friendly. but the dark, at night, must be something different going on in there!!!!!!

i can't figure it out.

when does the nipping stop!????

i have plenty of plants in there. what i don't have are like little caves or stuff like that for hiding.

****

my all female betta tank project is a bit more challenging than i thought especially since now i have four tanks holding fish now  :shifty:

you could try and move the decor around. it does help alot. or it might just be the age differences? or you don't have a alpha female, one that will take charge, or it could be they are trying just to make a pecking order. some many choises....lol. keep at it. they will settle down some time...
