Hello.

I am starting a 4ft planted tank (not rain forest/jungle-type but more plants than usual).

1. can you estimate how many angelfish can I fit?

2. also what other types of fish can I include in the tank? (I'm thinking of catfish/cory/algae eating shrimp at the moment).

3. do angelfish like calm waters or with current? I asked since the 1st first I was looking at (betta) is suitable only with calm/low current tank.

thank you very much :)

Plants are great, aren't they?

I previously kept 6 in a tank which was only a little bit shorter then yours and I found that any more would have been too many. Choose only healthy fish and aim to get (out of a same age group) 2 large ones, 2 medium ones and 2 smaller ones (but not the runts), that way you will have a good chance of 50/50 split in sexes.

They might pick at the shrimp, but do include corys and/or plecos (avoiding the larger ones), mine did great with the angels. I also had schools of tetra as dithers.

A bit of both, there should be calm spaces in the plants and slightly faster moving water in the open.

No problem :)

agreed. angels will eat anything small that moves, which rules out shrimp and neons.
is this your first setup? what kind of catfish are you going to get?

first ever setup! :) thinking of albino and bristlenose. and maybe a clown loach (spelling?).

thanks everyone!

yup. that's why I prefer to see plants instead of just driftwood/rocks/plastic hiding places. a more natural if you asked me :)

can I mix angelfish species? e.g. 2 "regular" angelfish + 2 black angelfish + 2 koi angelfish?

thanks again

Please don't get a clown loach because they are 1) schooling fish and 2) should grow to 12-16 inches if looked after properly.

Those are all the same species: Pterophyllum scalare, just different colour morphs. It is normally safe to mix the different colours, although I have heard that black ones may be more aggressive.

yeah different colours, same fish so go nuts mixing different types.
keeping a well planted tank can be complicated so i suggest going over to the planted section and reading up on co2
