Hi. My tank has a lot of green beard type algae. Is it really bad to have this? Should I get rid of it and if so, how?

Many thanks for your help!

I get this from time to time, more of a nuisance than anything, I just scrape it off with my fingernails.

Treat yourself to a algae scrubbing pad, seems to work well for me.

my rocks are covered in it, but the fish peck at it so i leave it o

have you got any pics of the offending algae, it'll make it easier to identify and easier to treat.

I'll put some pics on. By the way, when aerating the water with my internal filter should I try and make as many bubbles as possible or is a gentle flow of water better? Thanks very much!

I have a good tank with discus fish, but since a few months I having problem with algae, there are two types of algae in my tank:

1. Green spot algae
2. Green carpet algae

To avoid these types of algae in my well planted aquarium I have put in a couple of CAE, a few snails, a cat fish, but still the algae still does not stop growing.

The routine followed for my tank is:
1. Lights for 8 hrs a day
2. One cube of frozen red worms
3. 80% water change once every week
For proper maintenance:
I have installed:
1. Eheim external filter 2215 with original eheim media kit
2. One UV filter 18w

Now I need feedback from all of you to help me get rid of the algae from growing back in my tank.

Hi,

Algae is usually a result of stagnant traces of ammonia (undetectable by the standard hobby test kit) in some areas of your tank, and can usually be improved by reducing your photo-period, increasing the over all water flow and filter turn over of the tank. As Ianho has suggested, posting pictures would be helpful, my suspicion is Black Brush Algae, which is usually a result of the above conditions I have stated.

It is always better to kill the cause than keep clearing the algae, it will prevent different species from taking over the tank also.

Thanks, Jack
