Over the past few days I have been dwelling on my saltwater days and it made me think of the following:
In a freshwater tank algae is caused by ammonia, poor Co2 and circulation and no nitrates or phosphates. Nitrates and Phosphates have been often blamed on algae in the freshwater side of the hobby, but then tom barr came along and put these theories to the test, he proved that algae was not caused by nitrate or phosphate and that scientists had made a false correlation.
This made me think, is it really true that nitrates and phosphates cause algae in saltwater aquaria? And that it is not something like traces of ammonia, it would be interesting to test, and when I have the means to do it I may try it.
Anyone got any thoughts as to whether NO3 and PO4 do really cause algae?
