Algae Shrimp Possibly Dying! Please Help!

One of our fish developed white spot, and we started treatment tonight. We had one algae shrimp in the tank (we did have 6 but 5 escaped/disapeered), so we moved him out tonight as the treatment would of killed him.

We put him in an old small tank which was washed out well with plain water and everything before hand. The guy at the fish shop said to put a plant in for him, so we got a small one. He seemed fine, then a few hours later was led upside down! You can see the inside bits of him moving, so he's still alive.

We quickly took him out and put him in a small jug with some fresh water. I read a similar post on here, it said some plants are treated with snail killer which can kill shrimp.

Just a few minutes ago he swam frantically round the jug, but now is back to lying still on his side.

Could it have been stress that made him ill? Or would it be the plant? What can I do for him? Will he recover now? I feel so bad, hes such a lovely shrimp!

Sorry know nothing on strimp, but did you add declorinator to the water, plus really you should of took the water from the tank before you added the med.
Sounds like he gone into shock with the change of water quality, did you match temp.

Just checked on the shrimp again, hes still breathing, but some yellow stuff has come out of him, and some black bits, I don't know if thats poo or not, and the yellow stuff doesn't look good!

I did take water from the tank before treatment was added, and I didn't add any new water as I thought tank water that he'd been living in already would be best for him! The shop assured me they were very hardy, and said I could just leave him in a bucket whilst the tank was being treated, but I put him in a small tank as I thought that would be nicer for him!

Sorry i don't know, but laying to one side with fish is a bacterial infection, he might of flushed it out.
I would change his water now then, put some black carbon in and a water change as that yellow stuff could be toxic.

I've just changed his water. I put him into another jug incase the yellow stuff was toxic. I was going to put him back into the clear pot for the night as t easy to see whats happening, but just as I was going to move him he jumped up and scared me half to death! He sat upright for about a minute, but now hes back on his side.

I don't know whether to write him off or not, as one minute he looks almost dead, then hes jumping about! I don't know what I can do for him, or if there even is anything I can do! Should I just leave him over night and see what happens?

I would just give him somewhere to hide, even a clean cup he would feel more secure and less stressed. Make sure the temp is fairly stable and the water has no chlorine when they are stressed they jump so a cover is needed. They are the same as fish when it comes to sudden temperature or water changes. I think that’s all you can do. Hope the little guy/gal pulls.

Just thought you might like to her my shrimps progress. We went to bed last night with him still lying on his side and not moving, but was in a jug of clean water (dechlorinated obv) and a bit of the carbon sponge as suggested. This morning he was back upright, and is moving around as normal! He even attemped an escape from the jug earlier today! So we've covered it but left some air holes, so that he doesn't jump out!

Hes been back to normal all day, so Im desperatly hoping that we caught him in time and he will stay recovered!

I'd like to thank you all for your help, I think u've saved Mr Shrimpy's life!

Does anyone know if shrimp can live out of water, or if so how long for? As his escape attempt was him climbing up the jug out of water! We quickly put him back down in the water!

Also should I attempt to move him back to the tank, obv after cleaning it thouroughly and removing the plant, or will he be ok in the jug until the main tank has finished being treated? I don't want to risk stressing him out again by moving him back to the small tank, unless I need to!

Glad he made it, not sure on how long they can be out of water.
I would put him back in his tank, as long as ph and temp match he should be fine, as if he tryed to escape he dosn't sound to impressed with the jug, lol.

I would be asking how your fish has whitespot.is it a new fish?are you doing regular maintenence....it's not a happy tank sign,and glad your shrimps ok.

We're not sure how the fish got white spot. The tank is about 3 months old, but we haven't recently added any new fish or changed anything that I can think of.

We maintain our tank very well. Water change every week, and filter sponges changed as needed, we keep everything as it should, I got a lot of advice from the fish shop before setting up the tank. From what I can tell on here white spot seems to be very common. I can't think of anything that caused the white spot, and we haven't had any problems before! All our fish seem very happy, when my partner comes in from work they always go over and say hi to him! It's very sweet!

Hopefully the whitespot will be gone soon and then our shrimp can return to his proper home!
