Hi All,

I feel like an alcoholic who has finally admitted their problem, in that I've had a brown algae issue for some time now and am finally admitting I need help.

I know how it began, in that my maintenance of my 125 litre tank slipped. I'd wait until the green algae on the glass became ugly, then I'd do a 50% water change and clean everything up. The filter was hardly touched in a year, (aquamanta ex200). The plants were slowly taken over by the algae to the point where I'd remove many of the leaves when changing the water, and now my wood and rock feature cannot be seen due the the brown algae.

The fish are healthy enough though, still have most of my 2 year old neons and all of my harlequins, and the Panda Cory's even had baby's! Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate have always been good. Lots of plants in there but I haven't been adding ferts recently.

Recently been reading up on the issue and have already started more regular maintenance, including the filter, (which was in an appalling state when I opened it recently). Lights are on about 7 hours a day.

First thing I want to do is get better flow around the plants, so my first question is which power head would you recommend for a 125 litre tank? I recently visited the LFS but they didn't have any stock of the small ones, so am happy to use ebay, but which one?

I'm not all that familiar with all the different types of powerheads (I have a 660 that I run my CO2 through in my 55g) but 7 hours of lights sounds like it's contributing to the problem. I'm battling algae myself and cut my light time down a bit to help with the problem.

Did a water change tonight and pulled off a lot of clumps, (hardly made a dent). The bulbs I have are 1 x 20W T8 Life Glo, and 1 x 20W T8 Power Glo. In the cupboard i have an Aqua Glo, (20W T8).

Slip down to 6 hours a day. Look at a 900 lph powerhead and remove the algae. Make sure you do water changes every week and clean out your filter when you feel is needed.

I know how your feeling, I have a 90L using the EFX200 on and it just doesn't cut it, I just bought the EFX300 yesterday and I'm moving the 200 to a 60L, is your algae fluffy and difficult to remove or is it dusty looking?

I've purchased a decent timer switch now with electronic timing, so have set to come on from 5pm to 11pm daily. Water changes will now be weekly, filter clean will happen monthly now. I'll check out a 900lph powerhead on ebay now, thanks for the help.

Fluffy looking algae, a pain to remove. I'll take some photos tonight and upload them.

The EFX200 is supposed to be good for a tank up to 200 litres as it has an 800lph flow. I'm interested to know why you think it isn't good enough for your tank as I'm happy to upgrade if it will help things overall.

Well in heavily planted you want at least 10 x turnover per hour so when the tank went up 30 litres it just wont cut it now.

Here are a couple of pics...

Looks like black beard algae, or BBA. I'm told the only fish that will eat this is a true Siamese algae eater. I have it as well, and have since set up a DIY CO2 system. I spent an hour today trying to scrub it off my anubia and java fern, as well as the driftwood they live on.

Doing WC's with lights on? If so start doing them after lights out, spray all the algae with a liquid carbon/water mix 1:20 ratio while it is exposed to air, give it 2 mins refill tank, after few days will turn red and die off.

Lights go off, water change is done, lights go back on about 10 minutes afterwards.

Regarding the carbon/water spray, it's only really the ornaments in the middle that have the worst of it, (see pics), and the algae reaches the floor. If I take a single piece out, is it best to spray and put it back in for the algae to die off, or leave it out for a week etc. What is best.

Wait, what?? I've never heard of this method before. I just spent an hour yesterday trying to scrub the BBA off my plants. Does it hurt the plants at all?

It can make them melt a little but they'll grow back, prob is the parts with BBA on will die anyway as its so hard to remove and shuts out light.

Where can I get hold of liquid carbon? Is it safe in the tank when I refill?

Look up Flourish Excel or Neutro Carbon or TNC Carbon, I use them every day in my tanks along with CO2.
