I was wondering if someone can help me identify the type of algae that has taken over this plant. Also whats the best way to treat it? I have 4 Otos but apparently they don't care for this stuff too much. Are there any other fish that eat this type?

Sorry I don't know what type of algae it is. The lady in the LFS showed me how you can just rub the algae off the plants before you do a water change.

im sure there is a lot of fish out there that would love this type of algae. maby a livebarer or just a feeder goldie. they love stringy algae.

Looks like Red algae, (can be black also)
aka Black beard algae.
I have it in my tank (not so much now)

if it it I recomend removing the infected leaves, and cleaning anything with it on,
Apparently 14 part water 1 part bleach soaking on the plants leaves for a few min will kill it,
(dont hold me to it)
and I could be wrong on the Id

if its very hard to remove off the plant surface thats a sign it could be it.
good luck hope it all goes well.

I think it's brush algae (see bottom photo here). I've had it in my 29 gallon. I finally got rid of it by doing lots of water changes, removing the leaves it was on and scrubbing all the decorations, filter intakes, etc. I did not have an algae eater in the tank so you can get rid of it without an AE.

It is black brush/beard algae (BBA). Very stubborn and only Siamese algae eaters (Crossocheilus siamensis) are known to eat it.

Seachem Flourish Excel can also be used to treat it.

It will return unless you address the cause. Normally too much light and not enough healthy plant growth.

In CO2 injected tanks it's triggered by low or fluctuating CO2.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll do the bleach soak thing, I did that a while back and it worked for a while, but apparently it decided to come back. I'm also going to get a SAE to help with prevention and I found a new hood with much better lighting, which will hopefully imporve my plant growth. Might even add a couple more plants also. Thanks again. :good:
