Ok I have been reading tons of topics on planting the aquarium, and im buying everything and getting my aquarium ready to plant. I'm going to start off with some simple plants... most likely some Wisteria, Riccia, and Java moss possibly a few others.

The question im getting around too is... I'll be needing some good algea controll fish, but I dont know what to get. I currently have 3 small tiger barbs (1" big), a medium red tail black shark (2.5"), 2 small emerald corydoras ( 1" and 1.5" ), and my newest edition a 3" Senegal Bichir ( who is the main reason for changing my substrate and planting my tank ).

What would be a good algea eater to tend my tank that wouldnt interfere with the Bichir or be bothered by the Bichir or shark? The shark is very teritorial and wont let anyone near his cave... except the bichir which he just runs from. And I have seen him from time to time chase off the corydoras. So i'll need something that can deal with the aggressive shark ( the bichir suprisingly isnt that aggressive and leaves everyone else alone ).

I have read that only smaller Pleco's are good to keep with the bichir due to the larger ones going for their slime coat. Also SAE and CAE's suck slime coat and eye-balls out of fish. What would be an ideal algae eater for my tank? The 2 trusted LFS in my area have Chocolate, Bushynose, Sailfin, and Common Pleco. I havent seen a new kind of pleco since the sailfin in the past 6 months. There is a large variety of loaches available in the area as well.

Also would snails do the trick without being bothered by any of my fish?

You haven't mentioned how big your tank is...

You need to remember that nothing you add with eradicte algae, keeping the tank clean is your job.

great idea on the planted tank!! :good:

Since you'd have real plants in the tank, shouldn't they somewhat prevent algae from starting in your tank?

I think the bichir needs quite a bit of room - looks like they can kind of large! I'm assuming you have a nice sized tank to have room for the rtbs as well....

Currently they are stuck in my 10 gallon emergency tank due to a problem with my 30 gallon. I'm in the process of purchasing a new tank which will be 40-55 gallon.

My mom just called me and is frustrated with the algae cloud in her tank and the constant care it requires so she is giving up all her fish. I have a chance to get 2 1" Chinese Algae Eaters that are 3years old and havent grown past 1" ( Along with a very very nice 2year old 3.5" upside down catfish which i'm debating on taking.)

Can I have those small Chinese Algae Eaters in the tank without worry? If so i'll be adopting them ASAP

Also anyone know if the Upsidedown cat will play nice with the bichir?

Dont rely on the algae eaters keeping the tank clean. It wont happen-they will eat algae but not an amount significant to catering for your tank cleaning needs!

They are good for picking algae off live plants though,I find.
