Albino Congo Tetras

I saw a lot of albino Congo tetras at the lfs at about 1-2inches long. Do you think albino congos are common in the hobby? Has anybody in this forum kept adult albino congos, as i just wanted to know if their colours would be just as striking as the commons despite their albino genes. I already have 5 common congos in my 35g community and i thought i might buy a pair of the albino variants for breeding. I'm thinking of putting the pair in a 60L 2foot tank partially planted with free floating java moss. Will this be suitable for breeding? Thanks.

I have not kept albino congos, but I don't know what you mean by them being "striking." They're not going to have color at all, so if you enjoy looking at fish that are purely colorless, then yes, they are striking.

I wouldn't just by two. If I remember correctly, they spawn by scattering their eggs over plants, etc, and I assume that more than two are involved in that mating process. Also, the problem of actually getting a true pair is a big one. I would get a group of 5 or 6 and try to breed them. It will save you the trouble of sexing them.

I wouldn't waste my time touching albino fish if you want colour. Albino is simply a lack of pigment in the cells. They will always remain white.

Personally I have no idea why people breed albino fishes or even birds. They all look the same, white. It kind of defeats the purpose of animals evolving with different colour patterns.
