I keep koi as another branch to this hobby and have read that for the filters to work at their best the bacteria need air and some systems actually agitate the media or add air directly. Do you think it would be beneficial to tee an airline directly into the inlet to the external filter so that the aerobic bugs get more air and the oxygen is absobed before it enters the tank. It looks like a relatively easy thing to do, just fit an appropriate tee into the pipe and away you go. Non return valve essential!!
Fairly new to the forum thing so this might have done the rounds before and I'm sorry if some of you old hands find it repetitive.

Thanks :hi:

Most externals (if not all) have the impellor chamber at the top of the cannister - where air will collect... and you do NOT want the impellor running dry !
So , I'm afraid I would vote "NO" !

Most filters are designed to work on suction, and you would have to be very careful adding an airline to them

No, not a good idea. The design of canioster filters is wrong for that to work.

The filters you refer to are called wet/dry filters. You may wish to look into them.

I agree it's not a good idea in a canister. The impeller wouldn't like it. :good:
