Hi, I have just gone from an internal filter to an external filter for my juwel vision 180l tank.

I have just put the external filter in yesterday when the internal filter was taken out and the fish weren't too happy. So now I have the external filter plus a small internal filter running until I get something else to provide oxygen.

Can anyone advise me on one of the better air pumps to get?

Thanks.

your better off putting the outlet of the filter up near the surface of the water and alowing water movement to oxygenate the water

you say the fish werent too happy?
are you sure it was due to lack of oxygen, did you run the new and old filters alongside each other?

if you didnt, and havent included your old filter media in your new filter your fish could be suffering with poor wter quality, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate could increase rapidly without your good bacteria colony from your old filter

by the way - which filter? i am thinking of going external and cant decide what to get

If it's for your 50 gallon, a Eheim 2026 would be great :good:

I've already answered FiFi's other post elsewhere, so won't repeat myself :) Though knowing what the nitrite and ammonia readings are, are indeed very good indicators for the root of the problem.

Thanks for all your replies smile.gif

The juwel internal filter that was part of the tank was on the way out so I got the fluval 205 filter, I used most of the media from my old filter and put it in new filter.
I didn't empty the tank of water when I changed filters, I have been doing a daily 10% water change.

I have now sorted the problem. I went out and got an air pump this morning and as soon as it was put in the tank the fish were much happier and swimming about as normal.

The external filter has made the water sparkling and the air pump makes no noise at all. :good:

I will leave the air pump in as I have zebra danios who love swimming in the bubbles but in general is an air pump needed?

Thanks.

but in general is an air pump needed?
Good to hear things are going better :good:

In general: "needed"? No
Useful? Yes

Lots of fish enjoy and air curtain and play in the bubbles. It also helps with extra water circulation / movement. But should certainly be used during hot weather (when oxygen supply is lower) and when medicating a tank (to alliviate stress and provide some extra oxygen - especially when treating for ICH / whitespot).

unless you have a CO2 setup its fine. I think a better way of oxygenating by doing a 2 in 1 is getting a powerhead and connecting a little bit of airline tubing and you're good to go.
