Hi all,

I am running a 170L 4ft tank, and have been contemplating a way of getting more oxygen in the thing. So what i'm thinking is an air pump.

Am i thinking right?

If i'm thinking right, what size will i need???? I have a Fluval 4+ filter running at te mo, and i know i will need to keep that going but does that mean i can get away with a smaller pump?

Oh i'm soooooo confused!!!!!!!!!!!! :fun:

Anyone care to try to teach me anything?!

Thanks

Yes you are thinking right :) .
Basically the bigger the tank the bigger airpump you need. A small airpump would not do the same job in a 170l tank as a 60 litre tank.
Bigger tank = more water = more fish = more dissolved oxygen required = bigger air pump
Smaller tank = less water = less fish = less dissolved oxygen required = smaller air pump
I would personaly reccomend rena air puimps.

Though air pumps are not as effective at aeration as powerheads and filters.

The bubbles do not stay in the water long enough to allow gas exchange, and the bursting of the bubble on the surface creates far less surface agitation (thus increasing surface area for gas exchange) than just pointing a powerhead, or filter outlet, up at the surface.

If you like the look of the air pumps: get one. If you seriously want to provide more efficient gas exchange: get some wter pushed at the surface, the more ripples the better.

Hi,

I ended up getting an air pump yesterday and so far (touch wood) it seems to have done enough to make the fish behave "normally" again.

Even though it's a 170L tank i got one suitable for a 100-120L and situated the air stone in the furthest corner from the internal. That was were we seemed to have a dead water spot. Just seemed like nothing moved there.

I only got one that small cos it was the only one that my local cr%*£y pet shop had. And my friend said she would have it if it didn't do the job.

So fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone!

i have an air pump only have it on in hot weather as it makes so much noise

Amount of noise really depends on which pump you buy, rena are a good make and are fairly quiet. As long as it isn't touching anything it shouldn't vibrate to much.
