Air pump

i have a 46gallon tank, so far i have a 150w heater and a filter system. I question would i need a air pump> if so what kind

you'd only need an airpump if your filter was not a powerhead filter. you oculd use an airpump to power airstones and such, but they are not a must for a tank, provided your filter creates some surface agitation.

Actually, an air pump is necessary for certain types of fish and when cycling the tank. The filter on it's own usually does not create enough surface agitation to effectively aerate the water. When I was cycling the tank, my platies used to gasp at the surface for want of oxygen, even though I have a power filter that seems to oxygenate quite well. When I bought an air pump, they stopped doing this. Also the clown loaches that I currently have need very oxygenated water, so the air pump is a necessity, especially since the water temperature is raised for the sake of my discus.
