Air pump failed within a week. One thing i did thoug , i connected air stone at the end so that i get oxygen diffused well in the tank.

So can i connect air stone at the end of the tube?. Or i switch on and off air pump?. can i run it round the clock?

I do not want to keep buying air pump , i need to know i am making mistake by putting air stone at the end.

Advance thanks for your advice.

Hi, If you've only had the pump a week, take it back to where you bought it! They're guaranteed a year. Yes you put an airstone at the end of a plastic tube. The pump should be ABOVE THE WATER LEVEL as if you turn it off, water can back-siphon in to the pump and damage it. Take it back and they should replace it. They last years usually. It's better if you leave it on all the time really.

2 fish died without oxygen...lastnight...crap...filter is not putting any o2...as it cycle...may be pump is a must.

i bought elite pump with check valve. Now pump is too noisy with airstone...

If you want to run an air pump, get a decent one like one of the Rena brand ones. The cost a bit more but the air flow is adjustable and they run very quiet. The reason that I say if you want an air pump is that they are completely optional unless you use an air driven filter.
The lack o an air pump will not cause your fish to die from a lack of oxygen. Something else is wrong in that tank. Normal filter flows will be more than enough to stir the water and prevent it stratifying. If you have no water flow at all and don't have too many fish, the fish can get plenty of oxygen by swimming near the surface where the gas exchange at the surface is better. If that surface water gets mixed with the rest of the tank water the whole tank has good oxygen levels.

I think fishes are happy when there is air diffusion with air pump as their activity is at high level. No air pump..they are at the top and try to breathe oxygen. I think i was over feeding the guppies probably so too much waste collected. was changing water every 2=3 days. 3 gallon tank ( 15 guppies ).

i think one of the guppy died and some fish ate some part of the body or it body got detroiated.

15 guppies in a 3 gallon tank tells me all that I need to know. Your fish are not dying from a lack of oxygen. They need a huge daily water change just to remove some of the poison build up. An air stone may be giving slightly better oxygen than without it because it stirs the water but that will not relieve the nitrates build in that tank. Nothing will except removing most of the fish.
