Hello,

I use the Double Sponge Filter FS-3020 (actually an identical one from ebay). I use them slightly differently than designed.
I remove the air connecting pipe and plug the hole with aquarium grade silicon. This stops inquisitive small fry from entering the filter system.

I then trim the inside of the top sucker mounting so that the mount will slide down the larger tube a little. I then remove the right angled bend at the top and connect the larger tube to flexible pipe and then plumb it to an external filter and UV steriliser. You now have a cheap foam pre-filter that attaches to the side of the tank. I use this setup in every tank I have.

I find this method very effective in keeping my fry safe from being sucked into the filter. This method was developed after a lot of experimentation. I was very surprised the first time I cleaned one of my external filters and found over 100 live molly fry swimming around inside it!

There are at least two sizes of twin foam filters available of this type. I'd recommend that you search for the larger one.. (e.g. the FS-3020, count the number of "rings" on each foam, I use the ten "ring" version.).

All in all, a ten minute job to mod this one (excluding the time for the silicone to cure).
I also use spray bars to return water to the tanks. I find that this gives good circulation and excellent aeriation.

Good luck,

thing about buying one is you spend so much and you only get a bit of sponge with the filter when you can buy a huggge piece of sponge for a fiver and make more than one if need be or buy a smaller piece of sponge for alot less

I must admit that I bought mine on line somewhere. It is huge and cost me very little to buy. I have this one made by Azoo filtering a 40 gallon breeder tank now.

Been making these for years, unless I find used ones for $2 or less.

thanks - i havent got a clue where to get some pipe from, or a bung of sorts, and i have to travel 20 miles to the lfs which stocks sponge pieces big enough. hmmm. thats why im thinkin i'll go with the easy option now ;)

and remember that an
air powered filter is
only as good as the air
pump supplying it
