I read alittle while ago about a sump design some guy had come up with. Basically it was your standard sump design with a couple of minor modifications.

In the center section he had the normal miricle mud/fuge but this was raised up and underneath he had eggcrate sections which the water flowed through which encourages filter feeders to take root in.
The other thing he had was lots of Aiptasia in the water in section which he claimed did a great job of taking particles out of the water and being a useful way of removing nutrients from the tank (removing them when they get to many).

The setup was something like the below, there was a skimmer in there somewhere (cant remeber where and as above the water in section had a load of Aiptasia in it).

Water in::::--------Fuge-------::::Water Return:
Water in::::--------Fuge-------::::Water Return:
Water in::::|||||Eggcrate|||||::::Water Return:
Water in::::|||||Eggcrate|||||::::Water Return:

It sounds like a good idea but there are a couple of potential problems I can see with it.
1) Aiptasia might get from here to the main tank, this could be solved by having peppermint shrimp in the main tank or using UV on the return pipe.
2) If you are trying to increase the 'pod population then having a bunch of filter feeders and Aiptasia in the fuge/sump area might not be the best thing to do. This could be overcome by maybe having a seperate fuge (HOB maybe)?

Anyway, was just curious what you all thought. Will add the link later to the actual site.

A popular method in the Toronto reef scene, forget the name of the guy that stumbled upon it by accident. Anyways, he prevents aiptasia from getting to the main tank via a BIG UV sterilizer on the water return side. My LFS uses this method on their tanks, although they do it with seperate smaller refugiums so that they can use smaller UVs

I thinks its called a "bethenic zone" Basic ly you have a lower flow through the egg crate sections and this encouraged sponged ande tube worms aptasis ect to grow all of wich are great at nitrate removal

Thats the name of it yes! Couldnt find the link last night but didnt have much time to look.
