Can't quite beleive it! I had a female gbr on her own for a long time and 2 days ago intoduced a male. He is clearly younger as he is a bit smaller at the moment, so i didnt think this would happen so quickly!

(Pictues to follow)

So anyway, they have just layed and fertilised their egges all over one of the tank ornaments. My tank also have two corys, some neons and a pleco. So I'm reckoning the eegs will probably be eaten overnight tonight, as even the parents seem to be having a nibble here and there.

But if there are any left tomorrow what do you recomend i do? These are my first Rams and this is the first time any of my fish have spawned.

Any advice much appreciated!!

Also, quick Q; how often do a pair spawn??? Every so many months? unsure

Pictures to follow tomorrow

(I posted this on the Cichlid board last night but no replies, and as its a bit urgent I thought is try here ;) )
So this mornings UPDATE: The eggs are still there, both parents guarding them, both parents also having the odd nibble, but still all seems ok at the moment. My females egg tube is still exposed? When will it go?

Relaaaaax.

Unless you have a few spare 10 gallons around for raising the fry to a sellable age, what can you realistically do?

I would leave the eggs alone and leave the parents to it. Just watch and enjoy their behaviour. Yes, most likely the eggs will get eaten but you may get a couple of survivors, which will be easier to deal with than a whole spawn of them.

When my corys spawn all over the tank I consider it free fish food ;)

I imagine they will spawn whenever the mood takes them!

Annoyingly i just sold my old 28 litre tank to a friend :/ never mind, I don't think I would have anywhere to put it anyway. If they hatch is it worth me netting some into a little breeding box?

I wouldn't myself, the parents should watch over them. Let nature take its course. Theyre obviously happy to breed so see how they fare as parents and maybe hunt out some second hand tanks if you want to give future spawns a go. No rush.

Thanks zuulan :D and thanks soybean, you're probably right. Told my lfs where o got them today and they coolant believe it. They said its mostly males for sale these days as females are kept for breeding. Then I said well unless males now lay eggs I'm pretty sure they're a breeding pair lol. Bless them, they are still guarding them.
The female is called Rambo (hence my name) as I originally thought she was a boy, so it was Rambo the ram, but now the names stuck lol. Decided to call Mr right Rocky ;)

my gbrs spawn every month in my community tank, with mine they usually getting eaten by the other fish or the parents end up eating them.

Oh ok, thanks. Yh mine are having a bit of a nibble

Bad news. It appears my pleco has eaten them all. For some reason the parents don't know how to react when the pleco was near them. Sues the only fish they don't chase off

Well it was their first batch. And I'm sure I've read somewhere that if fish are raised away from the parents they don't have the same instincts with their own young. I might be thinking of angels there but coud apply here too, as you don't know how Rambo and rocky were raised.

They might need a few spawns to get the hang of it.

You're lucky! I have a male and two female Bolivian rams and he isn't interested in either of them, I'd love them to pair up.

That's interesting. Thee showed some really food instincts like protecting them in shifts lol and chasing the other away (apart from the pleco who boggled them ) but at the same time showed some not so food instincts like eating some eggs lol. She's lost her colour a bit compared to how dark she was but assume that's normal.
Aw could you not get another female? Or even swap your male at a lfs?

If you buy a nice 15-20 gallon and set them up in their own tank with a few tetras or something, you might have more chance of babies... :hey:

And no, I like my male too much. tbh if two of them paired up it would probably be chaos in the tank, so probably best they don't!
