Hi..
I have had my tank set up and running perfect for the last 2 months or so and I have just bought 3 new arrivals to my tank.

I currently have 1x Redtail Shark, 1x Catfish, 8x Tetras, 1xKillifish, 1x Dwarf Frog, 1x Sunset Platy, 2x Guppy adults and 2x Guppy babies.

I introduced a new Platy (not sure which type) which i think to be Female. My current Platy is a Micky Mouse sunset which is male.

The problem I am getting, since I gave the Micky Mouse Sunset Platy a friend, the new Platy hasn't stopped pecking at Sunset and chasing him everywhere. She will not let him close to her! Even though sunset always seems interested in her. Who tends to swim his way into trouble and getting nipped in the process.

Please help on any advice. All the other fish seem happy, except this little problem??

Also my Killifish which is a new arrival doesn't seem very active and spends most of it's time at the bottom of the tank. Is this normal??

Regards,
JOhn

For the killifish, how much surface movement do you have? I had my blue panchax in a 30 gallon tank, and he did the same - spent all his time at the bottom. There was a lot of surface movement due to the filter. The 50 gallon has less surface movement, and he's returned to the top of the tank for the most part.

He doesn't get that active, other than that, but he's like a rocket if there's food in the tank.

I think that's a dominant behavior, I've seen it before. Well, if you have another tank put the female in there for a few days before returning her to the main aquarium. Be sure that it's planted, heated, filtered, etc.

i hate platies!!1

most troublesome fish ive ever kept!

you really need a few of them to get rid of any problems.

i use to just keep them singly every time there was a couple big problems!

Do you think they might let me return the Platy back to the fish shop keeper if it carries on? Every time I look at the tank, sunset is being nipped. And yes I have the tank setup perfectly. Filters etc. which also has Minimal surface movement.

Surprisingly platys are actually schoaling fish along with all livebearers...they are quite individual in large numbers but you are recommended to keep 4 or more!
