O.k, after the chrisis, I have deicided NOT to get goldfish. Now that an operation is underway to fix the tank, once I have finished cycling I want to stick some fish in my tank. Please tell me what the best fish combination is for my tank. Also tell me the no no's.

1. 2 dwarf puffers, 6 neon tetras, 1 pleco

2. 7 neon tetras, 4 platies, 1 pleco

3. 6 neon tetras, 4 platies, one betta, 1 pleco

4. ?mollies w/ ?, 1 pleco

Any other suggestions would be GREAT!!!
Thanks ya'll.

unfortunately, there are problems with all these setups.

1- 2 dwarf puffers, 6 neon tetras, 1 pleco / the puffers are nippy and agressive, they'll attack everything and eat plants up. the neons are fine, but the pleco can get big. it may take years, it may days weeks, but he will grow.

2- 7 neon tetras, 4 platies, 1 pleco / tetras are fine, platties are good, but again the pleco will grow.

3- 6 neon tetras, 4 platies, one betta, 1 pleco / platties and bettas, in my experience, do not get along. male bettas may see a platy as a female betta, and when 'she' doesn't mate with him he'll try to get rid of 'her'.

4- 3 mollies, 1 pleco / mollies need brackish water, methinks, but the pleco could not tolerate any amount of salt.

i see, from your ideas, you seem to like Livebearers and Neons. so, go with that. a half dozen Neons, a half dozen Guppies or Platties, four Albino Cories for bottomfeeders, and an Apple Snail for algae. it needs to be done delicately, though. tanks differ as greatly as fish, some people can't keep twelve Neons in a 10g, others can keep dozens of different kinds of fish.

yeah plecos get bif BuT you can trade em in for a smaller one when he out grows your tank. Beta's are just mean little buggers. I had one in a community tank for a while but he was just nasty and when he wasn't picking on the other fish he hid.

ever thought about swords?? they can be more interesting then mollies of platies and don't need salt.

Puffers are generally mean little buggers too, best off to keep em by themselves with the pleco and nothing else.

neons and swords(or platys) will live together hapilly with a pleco

I set up a 10G with 6 neon tetras, 3 ruby barbs and one powder blue gourami. It's a red white and blue theme tank. I think all of you possibilities seem overstocked. I'd also consider ghost shrimp, great clean up crew for any tank, dirt cheap 3 for a dollar and don't count for your inch per gallon rule.

no platys don't need salt..I was just making another suggestion about live barers. Swords are pretty cool as well and they can interbreed with platy

commander doom.....how old are you? just wondering cuz i've been following ur posts for a bit and you make me laugh. hm i dont mean that in a mean way at all i'm just curious! cool? ~dex

I'm 14.

Swordtails interbreed with platies? That is AWESOME!!!!!!! alright, I have thought out my plot thingie mabob.

- six neon tetras
- 3 platies
- 3 swordtails
- 4 albino corys
- 1 pleco (I will trade it for another every time it becomes too big)

Is this good? Are albino Corys expensive? are swordtails expensive?

commandor doom makes me laugh too, some people might be offended, but I personally think it's funny....keep up the good work! Just keep reading in here and you can start your own fish store when you get out of schooL!

About the dwarf puffers, I just saw them yesterday at the LFS, those things are amazing looking! I am gonna get a free 15 gallon tank from someone, has fish in it now, but this could turn into my dwarf puffer tank. Anyways, the guy at the LFS said they needed brackish water, is that true? How do you make the water "brackish", and is it hard to maintain?

Ok, first of all Ryanfish, slap the guys at the lfs ;) Dwarfs are one of the species of Puffer that are freshwater fish not brackish, there are brackish varieties but this isn't one of them, have a look at the pinned section in oddballs, there a list in there and some really good info thanks to Pufferpack (should be known as Puffer guru).

Commander how big was the tank again, you can always go for a Bristlenose Pleco (ancistrus) they only grow bout 5" and are great, I've got 3 of them at present.

I gotta say I do like puffers and they've got so much character that you don't need other fish with them (neons) apart from maybe the pleco as a clean up crew, but they're not really for beginners, they need very good water quality, you'd be better off going for one of your other options, get the basic skills and experience in keeping tropical fish then maybe next year get another small tank set up and try the puffers then.

HTH

Do puffers really get bigger when scared?

My tank is 10 gallons. It is filled to da brim. It is about to be empied out though ;). MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I'M GONNA EMPTY IT OUT!!! YOU CAN'T STOP ME!!!!!!! I'M GONNA CLEAN THE TANK AND CYCLE IT AND THERE IS NOTHIHNG YOU CAN DO!!!!!!! I HAVE MYSTICAL POWERS!!!! ONLY I HAVE THE POWER TO ACCOMPLISH MY GODLY POWERS!!!!!! I HAVE THE STRENGTH OF ZEUSS!!!!!!!! AAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!! HEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

ahem. By the way, are neon tetras active lil' buggers? I like active lil' buggers. I don't like dull lil' buggers. I respect lil' buggers. But remember, I wish to try getting some fry.

- six neon tetras
- 3 platies
- 3 swordtails
- 4 albino corys
- 1 pleco

i have all these fish in my 10 gallon except for the pleco and i love them. i think it's going to be a bit overstocked if you put this many fish though. and if you want action. neon tetras are definitely fast and albino cories (who i got yesterday), haven't stopped moving since i got them. those guys are are so playful and cute and quick!

how about
6 neons
3 cories
1-2 platies
1-2 swordtails

Um I think you've mad ehte right choice in fish now, but it looks like a bit too much for a 10 gallon.. at least one gallon of water per inch of fish. some say 2 gallon per inch. Keep that in mind while stocking your tank, and you should stock in slowly, start our with 3 then add 3 and so on, I wouldn't suggest just throwing that many in at once. If you end up with an illness its alot easier to lose 3 fish then it is to lose a dozen

You say add 3 at a time. I think I'm gonna make it more like two every saturday. Yeah. Tha is unless there is a problem. The chrises is currently underway of being fixed.

good..and maybe while you're at the fish store pick up a beginner aquarium book. Hell my 8 year old daughter has read the first book that I bought for myself years n years ago, she prolly can offer you some fishkeeping advice..lol
