PH anywhere between 7.8 - 8.2, temperature between 78-82 degrees. Lots of rocks with caves and such for hiding and claiming territory.

Hope that helps :)

so basically... higher PH... is that about it?

my PH in tropicals is usually somewhere around 7

i got PH up so if i ever wanted an african tank i would just have to keep the PH around 8

The high ph is for rift lake African only, not the west African species.

The biggest difference between Cichlids and most tropicals is the aggression issues - there are many cichlids, even from the same region, that should not be kept together in an aquarium. Other then this most of them are actually very easy to keep.
