Hi' All,

Got a smallish african butterfly fish the other week . The store had it feeding on flake food they said so anyways i got it home and it hid away for the first couple of days and now it happily eats the Tetra Prima Complete pellet Food i give to the other fish i have. Is this sufficient for a diet as they're carnivores? Do they have any need for insects like they eat in the wild?

It's got to be one of the most intresting fish to watch eat its amazing, it kinda stalks the pellets as the current in the tank moves them and then just snaps and the foods gone .
When feeding other food liek bloodwood and chopped mussle to the other fish it just seems to ignore them , maybe its a little small for bigger food. i'd say its about 2inchs in lenght.

Is there anything else like this fish you can get? Reminds me of an arrowana kind of.

Regards

Ben

May sound stupid but can you buy like dead/frozen crickets ? or do they keep for a wile? only having one butterfly fish i can't see it eaten many of them. Also where do you get them? Strangley enough i can't find spiders in my house which is odd because it's an old house.

I use dry River shrimp. Most shops sell it, its used for Turtles. They float which helps and mine seems to love them. Tbh though, mine is much more interested in frozen bloodworms when I feed them. To give it a chance at eating them, put them in still frozen/half frozen. They float then as your butterfly will only eat foods directly in his eyeline on the top of the water. Watching them eat frozen bloodworn cubes is good too.

I've tried this but unfortuantly my other fish go up for it as soon as it drops in the water dragging it to the bottom. I will try dry river shrimp see if my local pet shop has it . I noticed a woodlice on my wall put that in but it sank and went into the filter
