African Brown Knifefish

Hi,I just bought an african knife for my 36x18x15 well planted tank,will be transferred to my 6ft in a few months.
Anyhoo,I know they're secretive and hide alot,but about every 30 mins or so he darts up to the top and seems to be taking a gulp of air.Does anyone know if this is normal?

Yes, they breathe air, as do all Notopteridae.
