My friend has a tank full of guppies. He has one guppy who is really really pregnant, and she had 1 baby about 3 days ago. She is still huge, but it doesn't seem like she can deliver the rest of the babies. She seems like she's having a hard time. She's been hanging out in one corner of the tank and appears distressed, although she still comes out to eat and swim around. Does anyone have any experience with this?

When I was about 12, I raised about three generations of guppies. My advice would be to put the guppy in a natural habitat so it will not be stressed. If you want all of the fry to survive have her in a small tank by herself. If the tank is too large, the babies could get sucked in the filter and they are too hard to feed in a big tank. A small tank is better because the babies feel safer in a group. Keep the lights dim, but not too dark. If she feels stressed she could not deliver the babies and they will die within her. Again, Small Tank, Low light, Natural Environment.

Thanks for your response. He already had put her in a 5 gallon tank alone that he usually keeps his babies in (there aren't any babies currently). With all his guppies, he's had about 5 or 6 births now. Should we assume the babies are dead and only the one that came out survived? What happens if they are dead? Will she die, and he should end her suffering?

Rub her tummy to help her a along in issolation, if the baby fish is stuck with the tail hanging out gently remove it, by a few slighly pulls, add a teaspoon of salt to her water to help her with the stress.

:) Yeah! Even though it took the mother more than 5 days longer to deliver the rest of the babies, she has delivered them! Does anyone know why that happend/s?

Some just deliver their fry over a longer period of time. It's normal. :)

Congrats on the babies! :-
