Aerosols, Room Fresheners, Any Fish Friendly?

What kind of substrate do you have? If it's gravel, that's probably where the smell is coming from.

Are you sure the tank smell is the tank and not some water that has been slopped on carpet during a water change and not fully dried, and the spilt water is causing a mouldy/ rotting smell? Just a thaught, otherwise I would be checking that no plants have rotted in the tank.

As for air fresheners while your at home you can burn candles (almost any scented ones will be fine but just don't burn them too close to the tank, just in case), you could also burn incense as has been suggested, even simmering oils that are easy to get from "alternative" type shops would be ok. You could also put out some tubs of pot pouri that requires no flames or electricity, and just needs you to stir it occasionally and refresh it when needed. Baking powder will absorb smells as will carpet powders that are designed to be sprinkled on carpets and later vacumed up.
But all of these will only mask the problem and you really will need to find the source of the smell and eliminate it for the future.

lighting scented candles wouldnt harm the fish lid or no lid just put them the other side of the room

+1

+1, but if you want to be really conscientious, turn any air pumps off while you burn them so that any vapours dont get absorbed into the water via the air pump (DON'T do this if your filter is run by an air pump, only do it if the air pump is just for bubbles / oxygenation, and then only do it while the candles burn..... oxygenation is usually more important at night if you have quite a lot of plants as the plants use 0[sup]2[/sup] at night and CO[sup]2[/sup] during the day) HTH. To be honest, as long as the candles are not right by the tank its probably overkill to even do this, but if it keeps your mind at rest, all good.

Another option is to have cut lemons near the source of the smell as they can absorb smells. But yeah, like everyone else says, find the root of the problem. Do you do gravel cleaning regularly as well as water changes ? Do you have a build up of algae at all ? Carbon in the filter can eliminate odours and also discolouration (but remember not to use it when using any medication in the tank). :)

Hi i dont hve a uild up of algae and i w/c every week, about 10- 20%. I cant smell fish, but everyone else can! hmmm strange.

Have u heard of scentsy? It's an electric wax warmer, looks like an oil burner but it doesn't burn it gently warms special wax to just above body temp and theres a continuous fragrance, nowhere near as dangerous as plug ins or candles and you can have it on 24/7. My friend sells them, will put you in touch if you like x
