I purposly went for a single 400w halide over my tank for a very good reason.
I wanted a tank that would have high and low lit areas, a place where light hugging acros and low light zooanthids and mushroom polyps could thrive.
If you check my tank out (the 100 gallon) you will see the halides is in the center. I also have the rock built up here in rediness for acroporas etc. The rock to the edges will be for softer corals (as can be seen on the right side of the tank)
Im hopeful that this single light (i will be suplimenting with an actinic soon to add to the colour of the corals etc) will doall i need when it comes to raising corals.
If you spend some time really thinking about the look of your tank long before its actually up and running it really helps with desisions later on. Dont get distracted from the picture you have in your minds eye.
Many people will rush out and get all the equipment.. a couple of halides to hang over the tank etc. and then later on they realise that they didnt actually need some of the things they got.
Im not saying that what i have done is the "right way" for everyone, it might not be how another person would want their tank to look like and thus it will requirte different equipment. But its the "right way" for me
Think about what you want your tank to look like. then build what you need around it
Good luck
