Advice/pointers For A Newbie Please!

To clarify, Pets @ Home are a large chain retailer here in the UK, and unfortunately they do appear to have a bit of a poor reputation (which I wish I'd researched first!). We haven't been back there since the first incident (except to get the white spot medication as it was the only place open). When I've been saying LFS I mean a small local aquatic shop who have been nothing but helpful, and seem to know what they're talking about.

The mollies were from Pets @ Home, and given it's been about a month since we got them, I doubt they would take them back at this point

The LFS may take them as a donation; if they have space they put them in a "charity tank", and any proceeds from the sale go to animal charities.

At least we now have a quarantine tank...

 (well, when it's cycled!)

I am aware of P@H's reputation, but being in the US have never been to one.  Though we have our own chain stores like that.  Each location must be viewed as a separate entity and all experiences with one store must be left as discrete observations from a single visit and never expanded beyond that.

We don't allow 'name it and shame it' posts where members question the motivation, etc. of stores or chains.  But, the recounting of a specific incident dealing in the facts of what had transpired is perfectly acceptable (as you've shared here).

P@H is sort of comparable to Petco or Petsmart in the USA sort of thing as I have similar stories for both but albeit some are better than others.

A better chain store in the UK is Maidenhead Aquatics, while not perfect by any strech of the imagination, they are somewhat a little bit more knowledgable about fish care. Of course they are soley a fish & pond type of store while P@H tries to be about ALL sorts of pets.
You will soon know which staff knows more about certain species and/or plants etc. Just keep plugging away asking questions.

However, the family owned stores of the smaller LFS, can be a bit hit or miss affair, but if you find a good one, stay with them as they tend to know'; more about what they stock and a little more reliable for their advice.

A minefield for the newbie really to know who to trust
