Advice On External Filter

I have to agree with you, Messi. I have two Fluvals running now, and they're fairly easy to maintain. I have an Eheim sitting in my garage because it seemed whenever I'd replace one part, another part went bad. I also have an off brand (Odyssea) that was ridiculously inexpensive but hasn't caused me a single problem in more than a year. It's only downfall is maintenance because the cover is held on by 6 screw clamps. Other than that I like it. My husband has one too.

I'll throw my 2p into this and say I vote for Fluval.  The eHeims are nice but I've never had any issue with the Fluval canister filters.  One of the drawbacks (and I admit it's a minor one) is here in the states, being the eHeim uses metric parts, it's much easier to find parts for Fluval than eHeim.  In the UK I doubt you have that problem though.

Alternatively you can build your own.  It's pretty cheap and easy.  Just do a search and there are tons of videos on how to do it.

I bought the EX1200 for my 40 gallon a few years ago for less than half the price they are charged at now!!

Anyway, my big recommendation for you right now is buy these NOW

my (then) 2 year old easily damaged one of these and waiting for the replacement which the existing was held together by some silicon was a hair raising experience. You will most likely need them one day in the lifetime you have this filter, so have them spare for that whale-tight-air-hole moment of clenching as your tank empties into your room.

I running an ehiem 781 they stopped making them over 30 yrs ago. With a little TLC and new O rings, running like a dream. I'm also running an old Fluval 301, beside one small (about 20 gal) leak its also work like a dream, no leaks on either. I really dont see a differance on any of the exteranals just make sure you do your maintaince.
