am setting up a 5x2x2ft tank and have been trying to find something to act as a stand. We think the weight will be about a tonne when full.

Do you think this will hold the weight. We can get it cheaper than price listed but are still worried about it collapsing etc.

Many thanks

That will probably hold the weight, looking at it, but as that's not really what it was desiged for, who knows?
My worry with that would be that it wouldn't collapse immediately, but start to buckle under the weight, collapsing in a couple of months just when you think it'll be OK.

Also, that would look really ugly IMO!

If it were me, I'd look at building a DIY stand - I've seen a thread somewhere on this forum (one of the FAQ sections, possibly) on building one, it's not immenseley complex and should be a fair bit cheaper than that stand you were looking at.

We are building a hood already and have zero diy experience so buiding a stand would really be taking too much on.

Think we will find out more from the manufacturer becaus we really can't afford a wooden stand.

Fair enough, DIY isn't the best option for everyone. I'm planning a 6ft stand (with extra space for TV at one end), and it is a lot of work.
You're right to check with the mfr - when you consider what a disaster a collapsing stand would be, 'should be OK' just isn't good enough. Hopefully, they'll have tested these benches and will have a rated max weight.

Clearseal make metal stands which I would have recommended (fairly cheap too), but as far as I can tell, they only go up to 48". :(

In fact, from a quick google, 4ft seems to be a max size for any sort of low priced aquarium stand, so I understand your predicament.

Good luck, let us know how you go!

Hard to tell from the picture how strong that frame is. But I will say this. If it's a bolt together metal stand like you buy from BQ hardware store. Made from galvanized thin steel - forget it!!!

I bought the stongest heavy duty ones they did for some 30inch tanks I had for breeding discus. Each stand only held one tank and they only just managed it looking at the bow in the base.

Your much better buying some 3X3 timber lenths. And even some 3X4 lenghs and some MDF for the base etc. And making your own stand. These cheap BQ style metal stands are not strong at all.

Or better still, find a firm that makes fancy iron gates. And give them the mesurements and ask them to build you a nice iron stand that welded togther from proper thick steel
