Hi all, just been watching my gourami build a bubble nest, and subsequently watched the mating and egg release, fascinating stuff. My gouramis are in a 200 litre planted aquarium with scissortails, Colombian tetras, zebra danios, corys, baby catfish and shrimp. I believe the eggs will hatch in 12-24hrs, but will remain in the nest for 2-3 days. What is the best technique i could use to prevent the fry from been eaten when they emerge from the nest? I do not have another tank and breeding traps are full of holes that the fry will escape from. Advice needed please, thanks

you could buy another net to keep them in....... :D
or get a tank divider... :)

Yeah, they'll probably get eaten when placed in an community tank, as most community tanks will not have the proper breeding conditions for succefull breeding. So your best choice is to isolate the, from any other fish...... Including the perants :good:
Good luck with your fish's

Thanks both for your help, Ian currently constructing a breeding net out of plastic coat hangers and tights as the male is building another nest. You were right, woke this morning to find no nest left and two dead danios which I assume was caused by the male protecting the nest. Question is once the nest is complete and the male puts new eggs into it, can I trap the nest in the net and let the fry hatch. Can you give any advice.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately another tank isn't an option. The net I have constructed is approx 7 litres in volumes, will this be large enough to hold the fry until large enough for release/selling?

It should be large enough until they get about a centimeter or so. I wouldn't keep any More than 1-2 males if I were you though as they can potentially cause a problem in a tank that already consists of a male DG

Thanks, I was going to stick to one male DG but may get another female to have a total of three. Is one cm big enough for release?
