Hi. Got a new tank to set up and would like some advice on what filter. It's a 100x50x40 cm and I am planning a community tank

Do you know how many liters or gallons it holds? Measurements (at least for me) are hard to go by for aquariums. Make sure to read up on fishless cycling here: https://www.fishforums.net/threads/cycle-your-tank-a-complete-guide-for-beginners.475055/

Just a heads up, and I hate saying this... But there seems to be a bill being passed in the US senate that may make keeping exotic pets illegal.

Oh ok. Good to hear you won't be affected if the bill is passed! Are you looking for a simple hang on the back filter or a canister filter? Both are really good.if you have the right type. There is a bunch you can put in a 50g. What is the PH, GH, and KH of your tap water? This will help us and you find the best species for your aquarium.

I was thinking a canister but the choices are confusing. Will get the water tested later today and see where I am starting at.

Sounds like a fish keepers nightmare in the US. I will Google that for more information

Not anything to do with the filter but these should be good places to get aquatic things from in the UK :

I just got new plants from aquarium Gardens and they are much better than from my LFS:

I would definitely recommend a canister filter. A little pricy but I use Maidenhead Aquatics' own brand: aquamanta. EFX 400 for my 230L. It'd be good for a 50G, high capacity and relatively easy to clean. The only downside to canister filters in my opinion is that they're very heavy when full, and this filter doesn't have handles that you can grip to lift it easily, so you need to have a good grip to carry them around (when full).
