Looks like I need to add some more sand to my tank, it's all well established an fish and plants are very happy so I don't want to drain everything out.
Any tips, I am planning to add pool filter sand as I hope that will be the cleanest and less likely to case an issue..

If i HAD to add more sand to my tank, i would do it with my tank stripped of all woods/ornaments/moss balls/heater, but with enough water for my fish to swim in. I would plan to switching my filter (external) off and add sand slowly over plenty of time.... try doing it over an afternoon. Some may say the temporary rehoming of the fish maybe beneficial, but depending on how much sand you have to add and why, then only then might you look at such a thing...again, keeping in mind the filter may also be off.
I have never had to add more sand though, but i have often wondered how i would do it.

Terry.

I use play sand from Argos, only 2.99. Wash it first in a bucket with a hose then use a jug to put it in the tank. Just make sure you pour slowly and at the bottom . I never have problems when I top up. :)

Check out the bottle method, I used this recently and it was great!!

^ this. Worked for my tank and when we put some in our family tank.

I wouldn't use that bottle method with play sand. I used the method Royston discussed.

Wash it WELL ahead of time. Put it into a jug and SLOWLY poured it out into the tank while the tank was FULL of water, but the filters were off. The water didn't really cloud much, but I left the filters off for an hour to allow any to settle that would, then I turned the filters back on and I was done. The fish didn't mind, and it was really simple. The keys were washing it well, and pouring it slowly and from just above where I wanted it to be.
