my tap water is running at about 5.2 for some odd reason....and for my apple snail the pH must be at least 7.2 or his shell starts to erode (slowly) and i want my snail in the best health he can get so im going to add a seashell to the tank to raise the pH level......what should i know before adding it? (i.e. boil it/bake it etc.)

what i did last time was that i soak it first in hot water...... for 1 day....

after that, i crush it, stole a new laundry bag from my wife, put the crushed shell inside and then chuck it in the filter.

However, this method is very slow though, especially if you don;t crushed them....

If you need the PH level to be raise faster, just chuck them directly into the tank. Don't worry, it won't go up that fast that it will send your fishes into PH shock.

cheers,
Henry

that's a good idea, you could buy some crushed corals from the store. put them in a stocking or filter bag and put them in your filter. They will act as a great bioligical filter while rising your pH
