I just added 2 new panda corys to my 4 gallon, when I realised that when doing a water change, I added 8 drops of ammonia instead of dechlorinater!!!

I did an ammonia test, and the reading came up as 0 ppm. Does this mean my corys be ok? I can't tell if they are stressed from the move or from the possible ammonia in the water.

I've done a 10% water change because it can't hurt :dunno:

if i put ammonia in instead of dechlorinator, i'd very quickly do a 25-50% water change. i'd keep a close eye on things and do another big change next day

you might wanna think about storing the ammonia somewhere different from your dechlorinator!

good luck

Ok, I'll keep doing water changes once or twice a day. Somehow my pH has dropped -_- It's at 6.4 ppm, and it should be at 7.0 ppm. The pandas aren't as active anymore. I hope they're ok, but 0.6 ppm is a big change in pH for these little guys. I've got a pH stabilizer and Proper pH 7.0, but I'm hesitant to use them because the pH still sometimes fluctuates :/ All these problems :S

I know :*) Stupid thing to do. My ammonia and dechlinator are in the same sized bottles but have different labels. I've moved the ammonia now.

I cant stress enuff water change water change water change and monitor ur tank tests avidly for first 24 hours
hope its all ok

What do you think about the pH change? Do you think the panda corys will die from the stress of it?

After the water change I did, the ammonia test still read 0 ppm. I don't know how this is possible, but I'll assume there's still ammonia in the water and I'll keep doing water changes.

The ph of my tap water is 6.8 ppm, but somehow it usually gets raised to 7.0 ppm.

and also DONT forget to rincse your filters
It's a UG filter so I cant.

Ummm just a stupid qustions, but how can you add ammonia instead of dechlorinator? :S

If you do a water change it should be fine though.

She just said they are in the same sized bottles but have different labels.

Pay attention. :D

Keep us posted on how things turn out, pandas are hard enough to take care of imo.

Seems odd that the water is still testing as 0  Maybe you could take a sample to your lfs and have them test it, just for a second opinion?

Lot's of luck, hope it all turns out ok :)

I thought that was weird, too, but I've done a couple of ammonia tests and they all read 0 ppm :dunno:

Unfortunately I can't go back to the lfs until Saturday. Hopefully the pandas will hold in there. One of them has started swimming around a bit.

perhaps 8 drops of ammonia is not going to be enough to cause super trouble in your tank... just go with the water changes and let us know how you get on. :D

That's what I was hoping, but when I was cycling my 10 gallon I had to add 6 drops/ day to get an ammonia reading of 5ppm, so I thought 8 drops would cause the ammonia to go even higher than that since it is a smaller tank. Oh well, I'll keep doing the water changes and see what happens. Thanks for the help!

But if your tank's already cycled then hopefully your filter will have taken care of even the 8 drops fairly quickly - sounds like it has anyway. I'm sure if you carry on with water changes in case then it should be okay, I'd have thought if it was going to show up on the test kit it would've done by now?

I hope so too. I'll keep doing the water changes every day, because it can't hurt.
