This is what is known as stunting and involves the fish's body not being able to grow as it should due to being in too small an environment. Their internal organs will grow just the same until the fish dies from not having enough room to house it's innards. It will be a very painful death and the fish willbe suseptable to disease.

This is really not a good thing and I advise you to return the plec asap or get a large enough tank to house it.

If you wanted to keep the plec alone, it wouldn't be much of a sight. If you kept it with the others, he might enjoy sucking on their slime coat at night, but he wouldn't enjoy his surroundings. Keep the fish's health in mind when buying them. Keeping a plec in a small tank to keep it small is like drinking while pregnant to keep a baby small.

Well, I am waiting on a new tank (probably have to wait a few months actually) but my pleco is only maybe 2 inches now, so he shouldn't be stunted before then =)HOw big of a tank should one pleco be in? You see like 10 big ones in the 25 gallons at the lfs, along with koy,and those ugly goldies....

Maybe, but that's not permanent. What kind of plec is it? Common plecs get to 14"-18"!! It takes a while but they do. Also, they are seriouisly messy fish and need good filters to keep the water liveable.

I would never keep a big plec even in my biggest tanks. I am not sure what size tank they need for a full size one but it must be at least 3X the length and 2X (the plecs length) wide IMO.
