Hello,

I was just wondering how to acclimatise a fish to your own water conditions. I heard about a slow drip method where you drip your own water slowly in with the water the fish is in from the lfs. How does this work? Do you keep the fish in the bag?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Yes, you can keep it in the bag and slowly add some of your own tank water to it. You can open the bag and roll it up a bit so the bag keeps floating in your aquarium, this way the watertemp will also be the same as your tank.

Float bag. You might have to remove some water from your tank to stop it over flowing. I usually roll the top down then use a couple of pegs to clip it to the side. Add a bit of tank water every 10 mins or so. I tend to leave mine floating for an hour before netting them out of the bag and into the tank. Dont be tempted to tip them straight in. You dont want to catch something from your lfs water.

If you have one of those breeder nets they work great to hold the bag. I open the bag and put it in the net in the tank. Then I don't have to worry about it tipping or falling. It also makes it easier when you are trying to dip them out.

Now that is clever! I never thought of that, will definitely do that in the future. Thank you!

it never occurred to me u could catch somethin from the lfs tank.
ive also let the bag float, then add some of my tanks water, let it float a bit longer. then tip the fish with water in the tank. so i guess i should be netting them out and then throw the bag water in the sink

Take you time with it. I usually add tank water very slowly over a few hours before netting them out. And yes, don't add the lfs water to your tank.

I don't think so. I've travelled for hours to obtain fish and they are regularly shipped in plastic bags, overnight and longer. Once they are in the bag I don't think an extra hour or three makes much difference. I always keep them very dark, no lights, and keep movement to a minimum. Never lost a fish in transit.

fish are tougher than you think - after all they ship koi carp from japan on a plane in a small box with lots of other fish, okay they are sedated but they do survive.

as long as you don't spend days aclimatising your fish a couple of hours in the bag won't cause it too much stress
