Im not sure If it was because I bought a lot at once, they are quite hard to count and I don't think the shops would want to give you less than what you wanted. Maybe you should buy a lot at once you may end up with a couple extra then.

Well, I've bought 20 of one species on 5 or 6 occassions (from different shops) in the past, and the bastards always manage to give me exactly 20.

£1 per discus? how come there so cheap. I think this might of been a one-off thing lol, I did buy 10 rasboras awhile back from another shop and got given 11.
You could just try putting them off while counting or something haha.

Had a massive die off, lost 36 rasboras!!! 30 new ones and my 6 original ones.
I had symptoms of ich, gill fungus, internal parasite, body fungus and velvet?. Ran a course of treatment but didn't seem to stop it all dieing off.
Gutted
Going to get rid of the final 10 rasboras and large shoal with something else, once you've had a large shoal you cant go back lol.

Getting 11 when buying 10 is normal... Getting 40 when you ask for 18 is just crazy!  That's just nuts, to be honest.  Fortunately, you have a larger tank, but what if you had only a 30 gallon?  18 would be ok in a 30, but 40 would be really too much... and then there's the consideration of other fish already in the tank.
 
 
Congrats on your mega shoal.  I have groups of 25 and 20 tetras in a 110 gallon tank and the different in the look of the large shoals is just incomparable to smaller stocking numbers... 

As mentioned keep VERY close eye on the ammonia and nitrite.  The first 12-72 hours will be the really critical time, as the bacteria build up to handle that boost in bioload.  The bacteria should catch up after about 72 hours though...

I only have 10 left now as they died off but I am looking for another shoal to take there place (gone off rasboras completely)

Not a clue guess they were bad stock, luckily it didn't take out my pleco or torpedo barbs.
 
Need ideas for a new shoal, other half wants galaxy rasbora but im not to sure what they would be like in large numbers.

The more Celestial pearl danios you can get, the better.

But they don't really "shoal"
They'll be in small pairs or trios..

Shame you lost so many... maybe that was the reason they were giving them away.... My maidenhead counts fish I buy with absolute precision.
