Hi just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this subject seen as all other available help sources are closed at this time. I have had fish for a number of years and havn't really any problems until now. I added fresh water to my 6ft tank on sunday and also cleaned out the filter as i hadn't done it in 6 months the tank usually is really good. The pH is 7.0 the temp is fine but all the fish keep coming to the surface for air it seems. I don't have an under gravel filter coz i have the largest via aqua filter for those of you who are familiar with that brand. What should i do???

Which fish is it that are 'gasping' at the surface and how often are they doing it?

The most common cause for this is lack of oxygen, u can simply add an airstone or direct the outlet of the filter towards the water surface to disturb it

Have you tested for nitrite? After rinsing filter media, even in tank water you lose a lot of bacteria which can lead to a nitrite spike which lessens the fishes ability to absorb oxygen ,change a small ammount of water feed less and increase aeriation for a few days until the bacteria re-multiplys :)
