this is a picture of a hydrometer filled with cold tap water(taken from a mate on another forum)

please dont risk your stock and spend the extra money and get a refractometer

Cheap hydrometer,lol....bit too close to perfect sg there owl..is he on a wind up..more believable if not so spot on and sitting at 24 degrees, lol
Saying that..true refractometers are a lot more accurate when calibrated than any hydrometer

I had that one. I calibrated it to the LFS, did not work too bad then.

What I did notice with that particular hydrometer was that it needed alot of washing and rinsing in hot water, else that did happen.

It did get me into a little trouble reading the opposite direction (1.025 instead of 1.030) when I very first set the tank up, only found out as I could not get the Salifert mag test to change colour on titration, it was way too high.

Will admit, a refractometer is so much easier, can be used to check water fom LFS aswell, that is difficult with those hydrometers, I prefer my refractometer now.

A decent hydrometer can be just as good as a refractometer. However I would still recommend a refractometer as they are a lot easier to use and have less margin for error.

Too bad a decent hydrometer will cost more than an average refractometer...
