A Snail Mystery

Please don't recommend clown loach for a snail problem. Very few hobbyists have the sort of tank that can house them properly and it's not fair to the fish in the long term. Assassin snails and/or a combination of squashing and removal is a far, far better option.

I have soft water and my assassins seem to do perfectly well in it.

And I have hard water, and last year sold about 40 assassins that had bred in my tank.

So that'll be that hypothesis blown away....

Ok, great to know. I had read somewhere that their shells 'melt' in soft, acidic water, so I was afraid to get them. I think I managed to get most, if not all the snails out of my tank. :::keeping fingers crossed:::

My tank usually runs between 6.2 (currently) to 6.6 with soft water. Hmmmm. In any case, I haven't seen any snails and am hoping that I never do again! I'm completely over the aversion to squishing them, so if I do see any, consider them squished! :sly:

I'm not sure what kind of snail it is, but I have a MILLION KAZILLION of them in my planted tank and can't seem to remove them fast enough. The pet store said they hitch rides on plants and it only takes ONE to have an entire colony of them, so they recommended to remove as many as you can, as quickly as they show up. Some people aren't bothered by them, but to me, they are very annoying.

There is some truth to this. Whether you're asexual or not, it still takes two to tango. Like rats, snails can change their gender if the majority of the population are male or female to suit the conditions. They can all lay eggs but cannot fertilize their own batch.

I might be wrong and stand to be corrected but this is how I understand it. :good:

EDIT: Grammatical error.
