I have 3 platy fry in a breeder net right now, but I'm looking to get another small tank just for the fry. Would a 1/2 gallon work? I know it's realllllllyyyyyy small, but they'd only be in there until they are old enough to be let into the main tank without getting eaten.

I can make a DIY filter for it, to avoid them getting sucked to their death. The only question is, since it's a DIY, how could I seed the filter? just add a small chunk of filter media into it?
This is the tank I'm looking at: http://www.petco.com/product/118219/...TanksAquariums
And the heater: http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...AvailInUS%2FNo

Is it too small of a tank? Would I be better off getting a 5 gal tank (which I could potentially use as a QT later on)?

Would I need to have substrate in the tank also? sorry for so many questions.. xD

Thanks!

use an internal foam/sponge filter in a fry tank, one that is air powered,

i never use gravel/substrate in my fry tanks, no need for it

I had a 5 gallon tank, bare bottom, with an hob filter. I put a sponge over the intake so it didn't kill any fry. The fry we're born in there and stayed until they were 3 months old. I had lots of caves and fake plants so they could hide from the Mom

Thanks :good: I think I'll get a 5 gal too, with lots of plants for the fry :)
