A Small Hood..

There is yacht varnish (as in used on yachts) and then there is varnish called yacht varnish which isn't actually yacht varnish!!!

However once dried hard thoroughly I can't see any problems really.

I didn't know when I did mine and just read the label - Yacht Varnish - Thats the one and on it went. No idea if it was harmful to Aquatic life though.

I think the mesage Harmful to Aquatic Life is much like Harmful to Children on any other product!!

It just means don't paint something that will be in the water with it or don't pour it in the water. I can't see any problems arising from a slight bit of moisture on it.

If you are really worried then Krylon fusion is safe. Costs a bit more but is used by many on their hoods.

To coat the inside of my home-made hood I used a latex white primer. It had the advantage of reflecting any stray light while providing a water proof coating once it was dry. I used a different approach to access and mounting both. For access, I hinged the top front and the front face as a single piece so when the top is raised, it opens right down to the tank top. For support on the rim of the tank, I used a rabbet in the edge of the vertical boards. It doesn't hang down as low as the ones previously pictured but could by just making a deeper rabbet. It also doesn't hang over the sides as far which was something I cared about. Here is a picture of the hinged piece open

And finally the hood in place, closed, but still unpainted.
