Well, where to start. My hubs and I were doing water changes yesterday and noticed that it was quite a struggle to open the cabinet to the stand of my 120g. It was rather strange so we got to investigating and notice a rather large crack in the stand and the weight of the tank was being support rather oddly. The cabinet doors were becoming a loadbearing part of the stand! We checked with a leveler and the tank was no longer level! Oh dear....

So we began draining the tank and really got to thinking about the situation. This stand is no longer safe....

I have tons of spare tanks, but none to the magnitude to house my oscars temporarily. It would be unfair. Most of my spares are 10-30g, with the exception of 1 55g tank. So I did what was in the best interest of my boys. I gave them to my LFS. Right now they are awaiting a new home in a 200g display tank that they have all to themselves. Sad to say, but the situation did give them a larger home that I currently could provide. The other good thing, I know the peoples at the LFS and they promised they wouldnt sell them to just anyone. My request was that they go to someone with knowledge of monster fish keeping. I miss my boys but I am confident that I did the right thing. My job doesnt provide me with the time to fix the stand in a timely manner and I didn't want to house them in substandard living.

I am still looking into the 6x2x2 of my dreams and hopefully when that day comes and I can get another pair of oscars. I would probably even get 4-5 to see if I can get a pair. (and rehome those that dont pair of course) The stand will be fixed eventually when I have time, and I will hopefully be able to set the 120g up again. Don't know for what...grow-out tank for some oscar juvies?

It's kind of amazing as those oscars were rescues but they stole my heart. They were great fish, beautiful, and like a normal household pet. Ate out of my hand, rubbing on my hands while i was cleaning, even wiggled their bodies like excited puppies when I came home from work. I wish I could have kept them, but I am glad I had the experience of keeping them for as long as I did. I miss my boys...

I was able to keep my severums, but only because they were significantly smaller than the oscars. They are currently in my 75g while I fix the stand.

potentially silly question alert

......could the tank not have been placed on the floor, thus giving you the time to source a new stand?

I'm sorry, DM. I know how it feels to get attached to a fish. And while I've never kept them, I can see why people are so attracted to oscars. They seem very personable. Almost like a bulldog or something similar.

Sorry to hear this :(

Worry me about my fish now as i noticed doing a water change yesterday the left side the tank hits the level mark before the right hand side! I think the floor is uneven as the tank is upstairs but i think i may take a look at this as i really dont want the stand giving way!

That's sad, they are lovely fish both very handsome. Mind you, that was so fortunate that you discovered the problem before something really disastrous happened. Hope you get the tank of your dreams soon :)

We though about that, but I have a cat who is way to curious for his own good. Also my children. Then there was the concern of the fact the the tank was uneven. It turns out the floor is warped slight so to ensure that the tank was on solid flat ground, we would had to move it to the basement. And I don't have the room down there.

Why cant you buy a new stand and then get them back from the fish shop?
Such things cost money that I don't have right now unfortunately. If I can get the stand fixed and my oscars are still at the shop, they will come home with me. But I need time and money to accomplish this.

In all honestly, I used to think they were kind of ugly lol. Then when I resued these too, cured their HITH and got them into a cycled tank, they really opened up. They made such cute faces at me. They really are like an aquatic bulldog.

Just make your own stand. look it up on youtube you can make one for under $50 if you have that to spare.

So sad, but I think you have done the right thing. Your LFS seems great, looking after them until you either can get a new tank/stand or making sure they get a great new home.
