Right. Well I have a mature tank with goldfish in it and I cycled it using the fish because basically it was my first ever tank, I was totally novice at the time and the people in the pet shop told me it would be fine. As it happens it actually WAS fine and my goldfish are in beautiful health. I will shortly be setting up my second ever tank. My question is this:
If I use some of the water, gravel and filter media from the goldfish tank in setting up a new tank will I need to go through the whole adding-ammonia thing? Lol... or could I even go so far as to cycle the new tank with one of my goldfish?
Sorry about this... you lot seem to CONSTANTLY be answering questions from people about fishless cycling and here I come with another annoying question!
Anyway, thanks for any help! :*)

To make it even easier, attach the new filter to the existiing tank and leet it run for a week or two. Set up you rnew tank and use some gravel, plants etc from the old tank and then move the filter over and add a couple of hardy fish. I am willing to bet the tank will be pretty much cycled right away as the majority of the useful bacteria will be established in the filter where all the water flows through. HTH :)

Is the new tank that you're setting up for cold water or tropical fish. If it's for goldfish, then no problem doing what is suggested but if it's for tropical, then I wouldn't advise using the same water or substrate. Goldfish can carry diseases that can be fatal for tropical fish but don't affect goldfish.

Ah right. Well I'm hoping to keep a twin spot puffer in the new tank, so yeah it'll be tropical.
