I asked a friend (he knows almost nothing of fish) to go to petstore and ask for a pleco. He went, asked for a pleco and whn he brings the fish home.....i have a chinese algae eater. He called the petstore from my house and the petstore guy said that the fish given to my friend was a pleco. So i got on phone and when the guy realized the fish was for me he started apologizing like crazy. (He still didn't let us return the fish) now i dont know what to do with the Chinese algae eater....its still small but i know they get agressive when older...

What does the store policy state regarding returning fish? Especially when being sold the wrong fish!!! You could look on their web-site or maybe on the receipt. Also, you could ask to speak to the manager.

He is the owner of the store. And no return policy which i knew already. He said that if it had been me then he woulf have changed the fish plus my friend threw away the ticket. Either way that store always buys my guppies so i cant argue much.

:(
If you can go on Craig's List or similar, maybe someone is willing to take him.

Politely say to him that you are not happy that he sold your friend a CAE when he asked for a pleco. It is not a pleco and you wish to return the fish to him. Mention that you have traded with him several times in the past and have always been happy with the service you have received (assuming this is the case) and ask him what he intends to do about the problem...then shut up. Say nothing and let him talk, if he doesn't say what you want him to say, i.e. he will accept the fish back, continue to say nothing. He will probably agree to the 'nothing' you have said and accept the fish back.

If he does not then inform him that while you have been more than happy with his service in the past, you are disappointed in that you will no longer be able to do business with him. At this point he will either capitulate or not. If he does then fine, if he does not then you will have to find another fish dealer or lose significant face -- and face the prospect of realising that the guy can sell you anything he wants and you will be too thin-skinned to argue.

There isn't any store close by other than that one. The closest one is 2 hours away abd well i cant order online. I will go to the store and solve it over there...see what happens. Probably talk to his wife, she is more likely to do something

What kind of pet store has a no return policy is my question? Even the mom and pop fish store I go to has a return policy. I wouldn't deal with people like that but it's just my opinion. Hopefully you can return the fish and get the one you wanted.

Well i've seen Petco and Petsmart dont have a return policy, only a death one.

I've returned fish at petsmart with no problems, they have a two week return policy if there is a problem with the fish, i dont know about petco though

oh really? here they only take it back (at petsmart) if the fish is sick, and only if you water parameters arent bad.

Start up a thread in the classified section. CAE's get a bad rap from being mis-represented, but they're actually pretty nice fish if you can accomidate a 1-fish tank for  them, so someone out there might take him. (If only I had the room

The wife took the fish bafk and gave me plecos. But yeah its only store nearby. There is a petco but the fish here are in really bar conditions. This pet store is only other place to buy fish and they are for most of time healthy.

I would assume that Federal US Law is similar to UK Law, in that if you are sold something, it has to be fit for purpose. You asked for an item that was "fit for being a plec" and what you were sold wasn't.

Really? I took a dead fish and four live fish back recently to petsmart. Craziness.

I think the same. I probably would have to double check with a friend of mine though. She used to work at Petco.
