It makes great sense to decide facts by voting for what they are.

I mean we would not need to waste so much time and money on education. We would not need science to provide us with good answers we could just +1 the facts.

If your fish is sick and you need to treat it, just let the other members vote on what you should do and what med to buy etc. Or maybe just say its not really sick and given enough +1s it will no longer be sick.

IMO if you need to +1 stuff go to facebook where that sort of stuff belongs, it has no business on a site like this, ever. The mods have this one 100% correct.

Haha, well is it just me or does that come across a little condescending?  I don't think the OP was suggesting something that would defy science or make life simpler.  I also don't think she planned on turning TFF into facebook.  I take it for what she was suggesting, a fun addition to a message board.  A way of showing a little extra appeciation for good post, advice, or picture.  Either way, I'm out, it was a fun discussion.  Thanks for taking the time.

Being honest, Big Tuna, I felt it was a tongue-in-cheek explanation of his views, not meant in an insulting or condescending way.

I will add, though, that if the thread carries on going downhill, we're gonna have to lock it.

We understand the OPs point of view, and on many forums it is appropriate.  At this time, the mod team believes that it is in the best interest of the board to hold the status quo on this topic.  We do appreciate suggestions and try to accommodate suggestions wherever possible.  It just doesn't always work out that we can.

I do see like and +1 as a little different. As I've used and seen it used +1 should mean that the information above is correct, not that I like it. When I use it it's to indicate pretty much that I would have posted the same thing had I gotten there first but that it seems superfluous for me to type it out again. It's like saying, "what he said".

In the Internet, a la Facebook and YouTube like has a different meaning, at least it does to me. It means I like something. I could be liking it for any of a number of reasons whereas +1 is indicating that I am adding my voice to the above.

For example eagles' post above...if it had a like button I wouldn't push it, but I would say +1 to it...anyway...

Aha!  So we need a Like and a +1 button! ;)

Nah, I agree that it's not really needed, when you have a website with factual information, you can't tell how informed the people behind the +1's were so it becomes irrelevent.

Exactly. Nothing on a forum should blindly be taken as pure fact, regardless of how many 'likes' or +1s a statement may have gathered it's merely a starting point for self-research.

Sometimes by posting that one agrees completely with a given answer serves to reinforce it.

When one posts : "I agree with the above.", there is no doubt about what that means. Obviously this is not the case with the terms "Like" or "+1"

And to some degree every member here, and on every other fish site, sooner or later develops opinions on who knows and who doesn't. This may or may not be accurate, but it will influence what advice we may follow or which explanation we choose to accept. It is essential that each of us have some method to filter out the noise parts from the useful parts in order to try and make sense of different opinions.

Consider a the case of a new member with a problem. They post and get several conflicting suggestions to their problem and they do not yet know which poster may or may not know what they are talking about? Now suppose they look at two conflicting suggestions and one has a bunch of +1s or Likes and the other does not. What do you think the average newbie, to the hobby and/or the site, might do?

Ok, so my intentions weren't to start a storm with this thread. I just stumbled across the 'board announcements and suggestions' and thought I would offer an opinion on how I thought the site could be improved.

I certainly don't want to turn the site into something it's not, and have to admit that I also never checked down other posts to see which had been previously suggested.

Some have agreed, some haven't. I gather the general consensus is no, so no matter how many more members may hypothetically suggest they like it, the answer will still be no.......

Therefore can I request the thread is locked before things start to turn sour?

Sure you can; I think everyone's had their say now anyway :)
